Or prepare to be impressed…
What does this guy do?
There’s this vicious rumor circulating that characters in my books are based on real people. What a terrible accusation! My books are FICTION.
I will admit, I do spend a lot of time quietly observing our kind—I’m like David Attenborough, but for people. So, when I expertly capture this behaviour, it’s not to criticise people. No, no. It’s to hold up a mirror. Is it my fault if people don’t like what they see?
The big one—Books.
What!? You’re not interested in my books?
That’s okay. Writing books is just one of the many ways I like to impress people… I mean, hold up mirrors. Surely you’ll go for one of these…

You must be looking for something deeper. Hmm…
Okay, I might have something. If you want to know what it’s really about, it’s not about making stuff.
It’s about Doors.
Why Doors?
My job, my real job, I’ve always thought, is to open Doors for others.
In one sense this is literally true because I’ve often worked as a real estate agent! A nice cosmic coincidence.
What drives us to learn more about people?
Often we want to understand the people around us, and we want to understand ourselves. Sometimes, our drive is to change others, or to change ourselves.
We want someone to open a particular Door.
I always try to remember, the Doorman’s job is simply to open the Door.
Whether or not people walk through, is up to them.
My mum says I’m an old soul. I don’t deny, there’s something a tad unusual about me. Then again, we’re all a tad unusual, aren’t we? If my unusual can be of use to you in any way, please reach out, even if it’s just to say hello.
At the end of the day, I love learning people’s stories, and developing my own. If you want to follow along and support, the best way is my newsletter, ‘The Doorman’, which you can sign up for here.
I don’t ask for much. My humble ambition is to replace William Shakespeare on high school curriculums worldwide. However, I’ll settle for being able to make a living through writing and entertaining. If not, that’s all good.
If you really want, there is one layer deeper you can go into Joe…
